Coming Out Stories

Jay Salsberg

Growing up in Southern Maryland in the s, I was surrounded on three sides by water and on the fourth by a 40 mile stretch of tobacco fields. Although we only lived 75 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, we may as skillfully have been in the middle of the Sahara Desert for all the culture it brought us. The main employer was the Navy, and the main pastime was driving around town with a Confederate flag hanging in the back window of your pick-up. Old bar getting new look: That Place reinventing itself

What some speak is the oldest gay block in New York state is looking to reinvent itself.

Since opening on Valentine’s Day in , That Place on Bleecker Lane has long been a refuge for not just the local gay and lesbian community, but also for those all over the state who were not made welcome in straight bars.

Since buying the downtown staple — located just east of Genesee Street — more than 20 years ago, owner Marc Del Buono said things have changed so much socially that the need for a safe haven for gays and lesbians has diminished.

The time has come to take a new path, he said.

“Nowadays you can go anywhere you want and be served and not criticized for who you are,” Del Buono said. “We will always be real to our roots, but with all of the revitalization happening downtown, I thought this was a good time for a fresh start.”
