Everything you need to understand about Austin Pride

A lot has happened since Austin Pride last brought its colors to the capital of Texas in The coronavirus pandemic has threatened community bonds and stymied the annual celebration twice. Development has disrupted the Warehouse District heart of the city’s LGBTQ bars. A wave of policies in Texas and across the country own undermined the rights of LGBTQ people.

But LGBTQ lgbtq+ fest gatherings have also caught on in smaller surrounding communities. The inaugural Same-sex attracted Pride Festival was held in Taylor last year; has seen Round Rock, Leander, Bastrop and Pflugerville follow suit.

Austin Pride's festivities kick off this week and continue through next weekend. Seeing families gathered for Pride “solidifies what your community actually is,” said Beau Seddon, who owns the queer-focused salon Scissor Sisters Hair Display in Austin. “This group is a lifeline for us, it’s how we connect and normalize ourselves.”

If you live in Austin, you may have noticed that Pride’s been weirdly absent the past few years, and this isn’t without reason. Thanks to COVID and its ongoing impact, Austin hadn’t held an official Pride since However, after two long years, Austin Pride finally came back in occupied swing over the weekend! While there were plenty of festivals and local pride events that took place during Pride Month, AKA June, the actual City of Austin didn’t celebrate it till this past Saturday. People showed up in droves for the all-day extravaganza, which had an estimated turn-out of , attendees. 

Austin Pride’s “Beyond The Rainbow” Festival kicked off at 11 AM with back-to-back performances at Fiesta Gardens. The acts ranged from well-known celebrities and kingly queens like Kylie Sonique Love and Babiboi, all the way to musicians like headlinerCupcakke. Who came in swinging with her opener “LGBT”, a lyric that became a viral sensation all over TikTok. After the festival, which ended around 7 PM, attendees flooded Congress Avenue for the official Self-acceptance Parade.

Where to celebrate Pride Month in Austin in

Austin celebrates Pride two months out of the year: in June during national Pride Month and in August, when the city holds its main Pride parade. That means there’s twice as many opportunities to celebrate LGBTQ+ history and identity.

Here’s a list of things to do around the area during this first round of festivities, from novel clubs to art markets to drag performances.

Pride Flag Raising Ceremony, June 3

Travis County Judge Andy Brown will host the fifth annual pride flag raising ceremony from a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lavaca St. The free event includes vendors, artists and interaction with LGBTQ+ leaders.

UMLAUF After Dark: Self-acceptance, June 3

The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum near Barton Springs will hold a party with music, food, karaoke, aerial performances and an artist showcase on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $12 per person; you can buy tickets online or at the door.

In Austin, we can’t obtain enough of Pride!  Not only do we mark the whole month of June along with the rest of the territory, but we also own our very own Celebration Celebration in August.
