Susan McPherson is Professor of Psychology and Sociology in the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex. From , she worked at the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Confidence in psychotherapy evaluation, routine outcome monitoring and as a research psychologist in the Psychotherapy Evaluation Investigate Unit co-ordinating the Tavistock Adult Depression Study (a randomised controlled trial of psychodynamic psychotherapy for treatment resistant depression). She has also previously worked as a researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and at Kings College London. From , she led research training for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Essex and is currently Deputy Director of the Institute for Public Health and Wellbeing. Her investigate spans medical sociology, psychology and disciplines concerned with mental health and social welfare including critical approaches to diagnosis and evidence-based practice.

In July , I left Korea after 8 years (10 years total) and returned to Wivenhoe, in Essex, UK. Why? Im still asking myself! Korean life was so relaxed and familiar but I missed my friends and family back dwelling. I think I would have stayed in Korea permanently if it had been possible for foreigners to buy property or to live in the country without having to exit every 3 months and return with an updated visa.

Hardest of all, was saying goodbye to my gumdo Master, Kwon Yong-guk. I had trained with him everyday for almost four years. When I eventually stepped on to the Seoul-bound trained, in Daegu, we both had tears in our eyes. However, leaving Korea in was quite different from leaving in ; with the internet and the likes of Facebook and Skype, staying in contact is easy and I video chat with him most weeks.
Before I left Korea, I already had an inkling of what I was going to miss, and I very much do. Most of all I lose Koreans. In particular, I miss young people. Korean towns and cities are filled with children and teenagers and street existence is

HOW IT WORKS
